This article contains content analysis of five English-language documentaries broadcast during the centenary of the First World War on BBC Wales. It considers the way that Welsh stories about the First World War (such as Hedd Wyn, the Battle of Mametz Wood and David Lloyd George) are presented to non-Welsh speaking audiences, and the attention – and lack of attention – given to some of the themes and subjects relating to the Welsh experience of the war. There is a comparative element to the analysis that considers the similarities and differences in the portrayal of the Welsh experience of the First World War in the five English-language documentaries in comparison to Welsh-language documentaries broadcast on S4C over the last forty years.
